All modes

  • Passengers

    393,910 million passenger-kilometres in 2021, of which almost 90 % are road journeys.

  • Freight

    2,183 million tonnes in 2021. More than 73 % are of national origin and destination.

Roads

  • Passengers

    Intercity Intercity passenger transport in Spain is mainly by road: 353,627 million passenger-kilometres in 2021, representing 90 % of the total.

  • Freight

    In 2021, inland freight transport accounted for 319,275 million t-km, most of which (66 %) was along Spain's State Road Network.

Rail

  • Passengers

    In 2021, 17,477 million passenger-kilometres used the Spanish rail network as a whole, 9,097 million used long-distance services, 1,977 million used medium-distance services and 6,403 million used commuter services .

  • Freight

    10,212 million net t-km were transported by rail in 2021, of which 8,642 million were for domestic transport and 1,569 million for international transport.

Air

  • Passengers

    In 2021 93.4 million passengers travelled, of which 26 million flew domestically and 67.4 million flew internationally.

  • Freight

    In 2021 945,211 tonnes were transported, of which 55,978 tonnes were domestic and 889,232 tonnes international.

Sea

  • Passengers

    In 2021, there were more than 12 million passengers. Of these, 9.5 million used coastal services, 0.9 million were overseas trips and 1.9 million were cruise services.

  • Freight

    510.4 million tonnes were transported in 2021 in all Spanish ports, of which 48 million corresponded to coastal navigation, 449 million to foreign navigation, 69,479 tonnes to transhipped goods and over 13 million tonnes to fishing, provisioning and inland traffic.
