Metropolitan transport

As a consequence of the growing importance of cities, metropolitan mobility is becoming more and more important. OTLE analyses metropolitan transport by collective means of transport (metro, tram and bus) based on the information gathered by the Metropolitan Mobility Observatory.

Mobility

5,906 million passengers per kilometre used the bus in 2020 in the metropolitan areas covered by the Observatory, of which 2,596 million corresponded to urban journeys and 3,310 million to metropolitan journeys.

3,970 million passengers per kilometre travelled by rail in 2020 across the metropolitan areas covered by the Observatory.

Infrastructure

1,286 urban bus lines operated in 2020 in the main metropolitan areas covered by the Observatory.

Metropolitan rail infrastructure reached 832 kilometres of network in all the metropolitan areas covered by the Observatory in 2020, of which 653.9 kilometres corresponded to metro and 177.7 kilometres to light rail or tram.

Revenue

The Public Transport Authorities covered by the Observatory obtained 1,988 million euros in fare revenue in 2020.
